St. Nicholas of Bari is a very important figure in the history of Christianity. Born around 270 A.D. in Patara, Asia Minor, he was a beloved bishop for the generosity and dedication he put into the service of others. He is said to have performed numerous miracles, including healing the sick, saving ships at sea during storms, helping people in distress, and even raising the dead.
St. Nicholas, revered worldwide, is known in Italy as “St. Nicholas of Bari” for the city where the beautiful medieval basilica dedicated to him is located. His feast is celebrated on December 6, the day of his death.
In many parts of the world, St. Nicholas is associated with the figure of Santa Claus because of his generosity and love for children. In Italy, the tradition is that on the night of December 5, he brings presents to good children.
