St. Francis

the poor man who loved all creatures

Today we celebrate St. Francis of Assisi, Patron Saint of Italy, a saint whose life and message of peace, humility and love for the poorest have made him one of the world’s most beloved and revered saints.

Born in Assisi in 1182 to a wealthy merchant family, Francis initially embarked on a wealthy and worldly life.
However, a profound spiritual change led him to embrace poverty and dedicate his life to God and neighbor.
He renounced material goods, donned a simple habit and devoted himself to preaching, inspiring many to follow his example.
He founded the Order of Friars Minor, characterized by life in poverty and preaching the Gospel. His life example and words invite us to practice our faith daily through actions.
St. Francis is remembered for his deep love for all creatures, summarized in the famous “Canticle of the Creatures,” in which he praises God through contemplation of nature.
